Chasing Perch On The Worm Dropshot

23rd November 2020 by Mike Duddy

While I have an ambition to improve my perch pb this winter, I’m not really that bothered if I achieve it or not. I just care about being out on the bank with a fishing rod in my hand, and having a bit of fun with my friends.

So with lock down 2 in full swing, I’m still doing my bit, working mostly from home, minding my own business and only fishing very locally.

I can’t get much more local than Heaton Park lake, and my local canals and I’ve snatched a few late afternoons off work to try my luck.

Heaton Park Boating Lake is a venue that’s always intrigued me. I have fished it on and off since the mid 1970s and sadly its a pale shadow of its former glory. It used to have specimen roach and perch, but in recent years these have been plundered by the cormorant invasion and only the bream and carp are surviving in any numbers. I had a session on there a couple of years ago, with expert lure angler Ant Glascoe Jnr (its a local venue for him too where he spent many a youthfull hour) and we struggled to find any perch. I think we had 4 smallish perch between us in a 3 hour session. I had two 1 hour sessions recently and blanked on both occasions. A very sad state of affairs – a great venue ruined by the black plague. Maybe it fishes better in warmer weather, so I’m not going to give up on it just yet despite my two blank visits last week..

A couple of hours on Heaton Park Boating Lake… blankety blank.
The park locks its gates at dusk — its like playing Russian Roulette fishing into the evening … will I be able to get out of the gates before they lock up or will I have to climb the fence

Last weekend I had a free pass from Mrs Fishing Fiend for a few hours late each afternoon. I spent the first afternoon on the Bridgewater Canal, first near Monton Lighthouse, and then a little further towards the Trafford Centre at Peel Green. I didn’t have any success at either location 🙁 and again – there were cormorant working the canal while we were fishing. Is it any wonder I didn’t get a sniff of a fish. I’ve fished both of these spots in summer months and always been able to catch plenty of fish — a different story now the water temperature has dropped.

Only 35 miles from the sea, the guy who built this was expecting global warming and rising sea levels to come faster than the rest of us.
We had a try casting near the boats, but again nothing. No fish, and cormorants working nearby.

On Sunday afternoon, Phil and I decided to have a try on the Rochdale Canal, I fancied having a go in the City Centre of Manchester, but Phil persuaded me to head a little further north and try the canal at Slattocks. Again, only a couple of miles from home, and an old stomping ground of mine over the years. The canal up here has produced some great fish of different species over the years, pike, perch, roach etc. I know this bit of canal well and we hopeful of a few fish. Unfortunately for me and Phil, quite a few other anglers had the same idea, and we counted well over a dozen other anglers out predator fishing, and another half dozen sat on boxes fishing maggots and bread for silvers. Its great to see so many anglers out – but not so great to know that they had already fished through the areas we were hoping to catch some fish from.

Undeterred, we cracked on, walked a mile or so without any action and then found a shoal of small perch lurking in the oxygenated waters of a sluice/race pool below a lock.

These perch were crafty little robbers, nicking our worms without grabbing the hooks. We had great fun striking and missing half a dozen times before catching a fish. At least it made us forget about the cold as neither of us had realised before setting out that temperatures had really dropped and we weren’t dressed for the cold.

Despite trying a few likely fish holding spots, and getting our worms nicked at a few of them we could only catch in the one spot, and the small perch there soon got wise to us after each of us had caught half a dozen of them. The light was dropping, as was the temperature and with was a relief and a welcome to get back to the car and a bit of warmth.

No idea where I will get to this coming week, other than its going to be within 5 miles of home.

A chilly late afternoon.
We tried all the likely spots

If you’ve had any winter success on any of these venues please let me know in the comments section I always interested in other anglers success on local waters

Fishing Cures The Blues

26th October 2020 by Mike Duddy

I’ve been feeling a bit fed up recently, drowning under a mountain of paperwork and red tape in the office, unable to get out much doing the things I enjoy.

What better way of beating the blues than going out with your friends and catching a few fish.

They don’t have to be monsters to be worthy, and fishing certainly cures the blues.

Have a watch of the latest vid, and have a read below.

Last Tuesday evening, the football match I was planning to attend was called off at short notice (non-league), and rather than sit indoors watching rubbish on Netflix, we decided to head over to Wallasey Docks to see if we could tempt anything other than pin Whiting after dark…. sadly we couldn’t. I’ve heard reports of a wide variety of fish species coming from this venue, but for me its only whiting, whiting and more whiting.

Then as Greater Manchester Tier 3 lockdown has come into force we have decided to stay local, and hit two locations on our local canals the Bridgewater and the Rochdale. Both venues hold some  good  fish, but its a numbers game,as there is plenty of small stuff that will try to get to  your baits first.

We caught a crazy little jack pike on the Rochdale, and had a whole bunch of small perch on the Bridgewater, all fished on drop shotted dendrobena worms.

My biggest perch is only about a pound and a half, caught many many years back on the Rochdale Canal at Slattocks, and maybe now lockdown has been imposed – its time I spent a little time trying to beat this rather paltry pb.

Wallasey Docks at dusk – Whiting soup
A typical Bridgewater Canal Perch – there are much bigger ones lurking I’ve yet to find them
Slums of the future?? I feel sorry for people living in these little city centre rabbit hutches ,, bright and shiny when new, but already showing signs of ageing and neglect by their management companies — but if I lived there, I’d have a spot permanently pre-baited.
I parked on Hulme Hall Lane (free) and then just fished the 300 yards in the direction of Castlefield Basins,,, it was a busy session
I parked on a road called “The Causeway” and then fished up the canal towards the lock gates behind Lees Brewery. This is a great section of canal that can throw up good fish of all species (as well as micro pike)

Over the next few weeks, I have a number of local venues that I intend to try out to see if they hold big perch — once I’ve gone through my little list – I will take on the advice that I’ve been given by a few friends and hit the tried and tested perch spots in Manchester…I could just cut out the trying and go straight to them, but its more fun finding your own fish !

Ashton Canal Fishing Free Parking

20th August 2020 by Mike Duddy

All anglers love a bit of free parking, and I’ve been meaning to have a few hours on the fishing on the Ashton Canal with lovely free parking for ages now.

Wedged in between Man Citys ground and the National Cycling Centre is the Ashton Canal – and a lovely big Asda car park offering 3 hours free parking.

See the map below and look at the red dots (where I parked) and the red cross (where I fished).

Ashton Canal Fishing Free Parking

Now its important to remember that the car park is monitored – and only allows you three hours for free. And also that the angling on the canal is not controlled by any local angling clubs, so you will need a “Waterways Wanderer” permit to fish their legally.

So, back to the fishing. I know the Ashton Canal contains a good head of roach and skimmers, I’ve also seen some cracking carp and tench over the years, but I was keen to add a Gudgeon or Ruff to my seasons fish tally.

I parked up close to the canal and walked through the passage way from the car park to the canal — no more than 10 yards from my car. Bliss.

Seeing as though both of the species I was most interested in were bottom feeders, I initially set up a rig to fish 2 inches over depth. A 2g pole float, and 0.08mm hook length to a size 20 kamasan B520 with single maggot on the hook, and no ground bait.

I could see plenty of fish topping but decided to stick to my game plan of bait hard on the deck.

It didn’t take long for the roach to find my bait, and I had a good run of fish in the first hour (but sadly no Gudgeon or Ruffe.

Then the swim died – pike maybe ?

Ashton Canal Perch

An hour of nothing was broken by a few small perch, to break the monotony. Then before I knew it, it was time to pack up my kit, and get the car out of the car park before the ANPR cameras stitched me up with a £100 ticket.

I didn’t catch either of my two target species but did enjoy a couple of hours maggot dangling  on the canal … all good fun.

In Search Of Pike

21st January 2020 by Mike Duddy

I caught some lovely small roach from a local canal recently  as I’d promised to “bang out” half a dozen live baits for a pike session later that afternoon with a mate.

There hadn’t been a hard frost the night before, but the weather was typical winter Manchester, cold hard and grey. Conditions that a lot of anglers struggle with (noted by their absence from the bank)

So on arrival I set up 4 sections of pole, a 2g pencil shaped float, a size 20 hook – fed an almond sized lump of sloppy liquidised bread and sat back and waited for the fish to wake up for breakfast.

It took longer than I thought as this method of fishing can often produce instant bites – and after 15 bite free minutes  I was started to have a bit of a panic that my bravado of “oh don’t worry I’ll bang out a few live baits in double quick time” was going to result in me having egg on my face.

Much to my relief, my float gave a micro dip — so I lifted and brought in a lovely little roach of about half an ounce.

The session then continued as expected with a bite every put in, using my smallest size of bread punch, and within another 15 minutes the larger 3 and 4oz roach had started pushing the micro roach out of the swim. If i had continued fishing for the rest of the morning I would have added a bit of crushed hemp to the liquidised bread and usually within the first half hour or so the roach of 8 to 12oz would again move in and bully out the smaller fish. But this was not to be, I only needed a dozen fish to share between the three of us pike fishing later that day.

The roach were in superb condition – with a lovely iridescent purple/blue sheen to their flanks, a bright red eye and not a scale out of place. Check them out in the pictures below. Small – perfectly formed – absolute beauties.

Roach - a perfect fish
Roach – a perfect fish

Here’s looking at you kid

So – I took tremendous enjoyment from catching these small roach, but it got me thinking that only through having years of experience did I catch them. Casting my mind back to when I was a youngster I would have been on a certain blank session on a cold January morning like today. The reason why I caught over a dozen fish in less than an hour was quite simple. I used a float and shotting pattern that is incredibly sensitive and a hook length and hook that were a match for a roaches eagle eyes in the gin clear water.

I see so many anglers both young and old with an inch of thick float showing, hook lengths like tow rope and a hook big enough to be fishing paste on a commercial in summer. I with tackle shops would stop selling this stuff – or at least advise the anglers buying these floats on how to set them up properly.

So back to the fishing.. I then drove the 15 minutes further up the canal to our usual haunt to meet up with Phil and his new mate Dean. A new mate ??? is this some sort of piscatorial affair – should I carry on and ignore this turn of events – or demand a fishing divorce ? maybe a period of reflection and mate/marriage guidance is necessary – we obviously need some sort of counselling – probably best done in a pub over half a dozen pints lol

Anyway back to the pike fishing. I know a lot of people think that live baiting is a cruel form of our sport, but its something that’s never really worried me. I stopped using treble hooks many years ago, and when I live bait I used a single circle hook through the top lip of the bait. If I catch I catch…. if not the live bait is released and swims off to fight another day.

I also think that live bait out catches any other pike fishing method – and I’m out to catch fish.

I met up with Phil and Dean further up the canal and set up my my usual rig – see pic below. I’ve started using these Size 2 Sakuma Circle Hooks – and again I caught a nice fish with the hook lodged perfectly in the top of the fishes mouth.

Its a pity the sun wasn’t shining as the gold flecks around a pikes gill plates reflect spectacularly in the suns rays.
Live Bait Kit
My Live Bait Kit is pretty standard – a bung, a weight, a wire trace (essential) and a single size 2 circle hook

As you can see – it didn’t take too long for the canal pike to oblige – and itch had been scratched – and after spending the rest of the morning chatting  it was soon time to go home to the family for the rest of the day.

My next few trips out are going to be in search of cod – as its that time of year. There are quite a few marks to try on the West Lancashire Coast – and I’m also going to book myself onto a charter boat out of Fleetwood… looking forwards to sharing a few posts with you soon

My Most Successful Lure This Year

25th November 2018 by Mike Duddy

As I’ve said in my last few posts….. I’ve been doing a lot more fishing than blogging this year so I thought I’d share a bit more about how I’m getting on.

Work and family commitments have put an end to the long undisturbed sessions of the past, and I’ve been having to take my kicks where I can.

I’m driving round with a 7ft light spinning rod and reel loaded with 6lb braid in the back of the car and a lure box that looks like this – and with a ready rigged rod I’m ready to fish as soon as I park my car.

The lure tackle is a perma-fixture in the back of my car and enables me to stop off at venues for half an hour now and then to let my scratch my urge to go fishing. Most  successful lure has to be this perch pattern in the picture below. I liked them at first sight in a tackle shop, and bought two packets. Sadly I’ve been using them up, and only have a few left,,,,,,and like the nitwit I am… I’ve forgotten who makes them.

You can see from the picture that I also use two sizes of weight – 3 gram for canals, and 5 grams for bigger more open water.

My Most Successful Lure This Year

They are absolute perch nailers…. and the takes can be savage.

I drove past a local canal marina earlier this week, and had 15 minutes to spare between meetings so out came the rod. I was fishing in an instant and was rewarded with some lovely perch from around the live-in boats where perch love to lurk.

If anyone reading this knows the manufacturer of these lures can you please let me know in the comments section. I need to stock up!!

Fishing At Monton Lighthouse

27th August 2018 by Mike Duddy

You might think that I’ve been out sea fishing going by the title of this post – but Monton Lighthouse is 30 miles from the sea – located on the banks of the Bridgewater Canal in deepest darkest Salford.

I’ve been interested in fishing this bit of the cut for a number of years now for a few reasons, 1. you can park your car right behind your peg (see photos below) 2. the water is stained orange by the ochre colour caused by washout of old mine shafts that honeycomb the area 3. its near my office and somewhere that I think might hold some decent tench, bream and carp.

However today I had the kids with me – so armed with a top 2 with 4’s elastic, Katies 6ft dayglo pink rod, some maggots and half the contents of the local sweeties shop we set up for a short 2 hour session.

Katie has lots of patience and will sit and fish for ages, but I can only get half an hour out of Tommy before his attention wanders – he spent most of the time playing with different radio stations on the car radio – but at least i got a couple of hours in.

We caught small roach and perch from the off – a delicate rig 1lb bottom size 22 hook. Nothing over 6oz but they kept on coming.

Now that I’ve tried it out once on maggot and battered the bits on the inside line, I might revisit with some proper kit and fish hemp and caster to see if the suspected bigger fish which live in the vicinity might want to come out to play.

The nearest tackle shop is Monton Tackle less than half a mile away. And this section of canal is controlled by Warrington Anglers … you can buy a ticket from the tackle shop

Fishing On Christmas Day

25th December 2015 by Mike Duddy

Hi Everyone – Happy Christmas

Have you ever wondered about getting out fishing on Christmas Day?
Some people get out there every year without fail, some never

I have lucky friends who can get out on the bank every 25th December.
From cod fishing on the beach at Rossall Point, Fleetwood; to fishing a match and getting home mid afternoon to a Christmas dinner – some people seem to be able to fit it in every year.

I’ve only ever managed to do it once – during a fantastic winter break in Kenya the local charter skipper was fully booked apart from xmas day, and the hotel was preparing christmas dinner at 8pm sharp – a day that was destined to provide some amazing sport didn’t disappoint. It ended up as a great family day out on the Indian Ocean – a trip that I’ve never bettered. Take a look at these pics – or go back in time and have a read of the blog post that I wrote about it back in Jan 2010.

Xmas Day FishingChristmas Day FishingFishing Fiend Sailfish

With a couple of small additions to my family over the last couple of years, my current chances of getting out fishing on Christmas are hovering around the zero to not a chance range…

And despite telling people when they ask me what I want for Christmas that I would be more than happy with any bit of fishing tackle that a fishing shop will sell them……. I can’t remember the last time I got someone to buy me some fishing kit for Christmas……… thinking back on it,, it was probably when my mum bought me a float rod when i was 11.

UNTIL………with me now aged 49 and my mum nearly 80 she has caved in (to doing her xmas shopping online) to buying me some fishing kit for xmas – an amazon cop out but I certainly don’t mind.

Not wanting to break her bank – this morning i unwrapped a Shakespeare Agility 7ft drop shot rod, and an Okuma Red Core reel.

fishing rodokuma reel

Now I knew this stuff was coming, because I had to do the online ordering for her.  So in anticipation of the Post Mans knock I took a trip to our new local tackle shop (****** yes!! new local tackle shops!! 2 new stores have opened in Manchester in 2015) and stocked up on some weird looking drop shot kit from Savage Gear.

And this evening I’ve been watching this – to see what its all about

So – I’ve got a few hours free tomorrow as I neatly side stepped going to the local panto with the rest of my family……… watch out fishies – here I come………
