The weather was lovely this afternoon, so i grabbed my spinning gear and headed off down to the River Irwell for the last few hours of daylight. I fished a couple of new swims, but didnt get a touch.
However, i did get a follow from a really decent Pike, well into double figures, however it didnt get within 3 feet of my lure, and as saw it following, i slowed my retrieve down – this didnt work, as the fish just turned around and swam off.
Maybe next week i might come down for a few hours with some dead baits and see if the fish is still there.
I’ll post a picture of the lure i was using later.

Great Blog!
I've always fancied wetting a line on the Irwell and your blog has tempted me even more. Once the weather warms up I might root out me tin hat and give it a go.
Have you ever tried the Tame or the Goyt?

Hi,
Did a bit of recce on the Irwell today around the Kersal Dale area. Don't know if you've fished the river in that vicinity. Despite the rubbish and litter etc., there are a number of nice swims.
Any thoughts?
Regards
Alan

Hi Alan,
the swims in that area look like some of the best on the river – and in an ideal world they would be.
However, downstream of ringley sewage works the fishing can be patchy to say the least.
I have had quite a few chub from kersal vale area and alot of jack pike.
Good Luck
Mike
