I spent the afternoon at Mere Beck with Phil and Tony. I blanked, as did Phil but Tony had a nice small blue trout. This was my first ever visit to this fishery, and i have to be honest and say that i think its lovely.
The small interlinked lakes are deep, and i think that only having a floating line today was a hindrance. I did get a good bite on a small green ptn late in the afternoon, but a shake of the fishes head threw the hook before i really got connected.
After starting out with all the best intentions, using spiders, buzzers and other imitative flies, as a blank seemed more and more likely i swapped over to a team of three lures (talk about a sign of desperation!).
Even this move didn’t pay dividends – but at least i enjoyed some winter sun in wonderful surroundings. Due to this fisheries proximity to Martin Mere a RSPB reserve, we were treated to huge flying “V”s of geese late on in the afternoon. Some of these flocks must have had upwards of 150 birds – a truly memorable sight.

Sometimes the fish give us the back, but the day gives us other things as this flock of geese sees.
Nice blog.
I had a go at Beck on Monday. Fish were rising everywhere. One or two people had the odd fish on a buzzer or a bloodworm, but I tried all sorts and couldn’t get a take.
Hi Kerwin,
I had similar trouble last year at a fishery called roughlee.
I spent all day trying to catch fish which were cruising in the top 3 feet of the water. Was most frustrating. With more experience at the time i would have tried fishing different coloured emergers rather than buzzers as i now know that this is what the fish were likely to be taking.
Might have been the same on Monday at Mere Beck as the temperatures have been above normal for the last few days which may have encouraged a small hatch.
When if fished with the guys on Sunday, there were hardly any fish visibly moving. I think on this occaision my downfall was not fishing deep enough! Its one of the amazing things about fishing that the tactics you use one day may be completely inappropriate the next.
I enjoyed Mere Beck, and will definately return – a very pretty venue in winter which i am sure will be amazing when summer colours are added.
I’m thinking of going roach fishing at Twin Lakes on Saturday – have you tried this venue?
The fish looked like they were taking something just below the surface so you’re probably right that they were taking emergers. I thought of trying some buzzers that sit just below the surface, but I didn’t have any on the day so I’ll get a few soon.
I’ve never fished Twin Lakes, although I think it’s on the Southport card so I might try it soon.
