Tomorrow is the last day of the Salmon season and I’ve not had one so far this year so today I decided to have a final fling with a few lures. With time being limited, I could only manage a couple of hours on the Mersey rather than taking time to drive up to the Ribble.
Some lovely autumn sunshine made the afternoon quite pleasant – but as I suspected before even starting to fish the day ended with a blank. I didnt even see any signs of fish whereas I’ve seen plenty of salmon on each time I’ve been on the Ribble this summer.
I always enjoy flinging a few lures about, and these below have been regulars in my box this year. Maybe I should chuck them all in the bin and start again as this season has been a spectacular dissapointment on the lure fishing front.

Hi Mike,
Hard luck with Salmon, but don't give up. Imagine it, a Salmon…..from the mersey. Now that would be a tale we'd all want to hear.
Hi Alan,
they're definately in there – its just a matter of right place right time right/lucky lure.
I suppose its like looking for a needle in a haystack as there are so few of them.
The weir pool seems to be a good a spot as any – the chances of getting chub, perch or pike are much higher – but even they eluded me the other day.
Will be having a few hours on the Bridgewater on Saturday.
Can you put in a link on your blog to the boltonflytyers blog.
Cheers
Phil
Hey Mike, for what its worth, since moving to Northenden 6 months ago, I have fished from the Weir up to Simons Bridge on many a day. However, only managed 3 small chub all season on the fly. Worm surprisingly has not hooked me anything this season. Have not bothered with lures as I know of too many under water features that are happy to keep them.
After last years trout haul, I though this year would be even better, but alas not! Will have to try the old Adelphi Weir again soon for a pike!
May see you down there!
Chris
